Our story
A group of college students were in a marketing class at Canisius College and were asked to create a marketing campaign for Advanta Bank.

It wasn't just any campaign but a campaign to encourage their consumers to move from traditional paper billing to the now common paperless billing. Please note that this was a cutting edge idea at the time and the concept was well ahead of the curve. While working on the campaign, our group noticed a few key factors.

  1. When considering communication costs email was cheap relative to other media (radio, print, mail and tv)
  2. Email was quick and could allow you to be first to market (theoretically speaking an email can be out to millions in under an hour if the infrastructure is there)
  3. Email and spam were often confused, the common term now is permission based marketing
  4. Email has tracking ability and therefore was easily quantifiable
  5. Email could help strengthen your brand identity if done properly

To make a long story short, our group put the campaign together and ended up with an honorable mention (not bad considering we were competing against IVY league schools such as Harvard and Yale). Those core concepts are the foundation to our business to this day. Following graduation one of the group members started his first company and email marketing has been a major component of the marketing mix for online thymes, llc.
